THE AUTISM ANTHEM

flapping my hands and strolling on my toes
suffer from sensory overload
extremely exclusive ’bout what I elect to eat
I engage in echolalia speech
even though I may avoid eye contact with you
and rarely render reciprocity
your affection and direction allow me to achieve — toward autonomy

pardon me for my persnickety proclivities
and didactic delivery
struggle making sense of someone touching me
what is empathy?
even though I may avoid eye contact with you
and rarely render reciprocity
your affection and direction allow me to achieve — toward autonomy

ABA, Floortime, Miller Method, RDI
I laugh boisterously when other people cry
rocking and twirling and strolling on my toes
at times I feel isolated and all alone
even though I may avoid eye contact with you
and rarely render reciprocity
some day in a sphere not so far away from here I’ll thank you for all you’ve sacrificed for me

  1. I am a mother of a 17 yr old with autism….which I intervened with therapies at the age of two. I cannot tell you how important this information is to parents dealing with denial and bad advise. Thank you for bringing light to the fact that this is a front end gift to a child suffering these challenges. With normal situations we gift are children as they need it! Not realizing this therapy is paramount to there day to day survival….again thank you!
